Adriaan Landman He studied at the University of Pretoria in Art Education and later in History of Art and Curriculum Studies which culminated in a PhD on the development of creative thinking in the teaching of young art students. His Masters Degree in History of Art was written on the symbols used in the work of the South African artist Judith Mason. He debuted with mixed media artworks at the Beuster Skolimowsky Gallery in Pretoria in 1981. Several solo exhibitions followed after his debut. Highveld Images (1983) at The South African Association of Arts in Pretoria, two exhibitions in Potchefstroom (The Passion (1984), Moments of People (1985) an exhibition in Kimberley (1987), Mannequins and Decoys (1987) at the Frieda van Schalkwyk Gallery in Pretoria, Face to Face (2008) Welgemeend, Cape Town to mention but a few. After 22 years in art education he was involved for several years in the restaurant industry. In 2006 he decided to go back to the educational sector and started to teach Art at High School Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town. Later he was appointed head of the Art School at the College of Cape Town. During this period he started to exhibit frequently again, locally as well as abroad. As head of the Art Department he introduced Graphic Design as a subject in Colleges and is still the Internal Moderator for the subject at the Department of National Education. Adriaan Landman published many academic articles which include research on affective learning, curriculum development for art education, history of art and was also co-author for a book, In Retro (2013), on the work of the South African abstract artist Hannatjie van der Wat. In 2009 he was promoted as head of Langeberg Secondary School in Robertson. The last 13 years he mainly dedicated himself to the education and upliftment of his society. He is an avid reader of literature and poetry and decided after retirement to become involved in the Poetry Festival in McGregor. He is also a keen gardener, cook and classical music lover with a special interest in cello music and the human voice. Retirement gives him the opportunity to paint fulltime again. 66 SMALL MOMENTS solo exhibition Take a look at Adriaan's artwork. Mike Smart Geologist to Artist Mike spent 40 years as a professional geologist, preparing to sail into the arts. His extensive travel in rural Southern Africa allowed him to experience the rich diversity of terrain, ecosystems and culture. He was inspired to take up the brushes about 16 years ago. Retirement in 2017 gifted him much more opportunity to interact with the rich Western Cape talent via workshops and painting outings. Building mind pictures of the earth and its processes is second nature to Mike. His aptitude for landscape art was born crawling across, mapping and describing rocks. Art provides a conduit for him to celebrate the road he has travelled. It has released him from the confines of scientific rigour and a corporate environment. Mike’s paintings illuminate Creation – nature, wide open spaces and ultimately freedom. Take a look at Mike's artwork. Kim Nash Kim was born in Cape Town, South Africa and spent many years working in front of cameras in Europe and the United States. Upon returning to her homeland, she studied Interior Design for a two-year period. After having two children, Kim opened a photographic studio operated out of her home, running it for fifteen years. During this time, she found herself drawn to painting the images from her work. This led to commission requests from her clients which continued for multiple years. Currently living in the peaceful village of McGregor, Kim has taken up her paint brushes once again. This upcoming exhibition at La Galleria will mark the first showing of her work in this format. Take a look at Kim's artwork. Carey May I started out working in Community development and a Community Arts Centre for many years. As I worked daily with art I decided to launch into becoming an oil and Acrylic painter myself and studied art informally. I was part of a group of artists studying in Durban and London. I began exhibiting in 2000 and have had a solo exhibition Artspace Durban. Living in McGregor has made me aware of strong contrasts of light and shadow. I incorporate this inspiration from the landscape into my paintings by layers of paint. I often layer paint four times. My influences have been color field paintings and abstract works by Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler. I try to depict the architecture, people and found objects of the Boland,Overberg and Karoo. By using intense color I aim to evoke the luminous landscape and a deep connection to passages of light. Take a look at Carey's artwork. Mary-Louise Stein An inspired and driven personality with over 20 years of experience in both the art and education fields.. Despite having learnt so much over the years I am still keen to learn and grow and stretch myself further in order to provide the best of myself. As a teacher I have not only inspired my learners but drawn much inspiration from their energy over the years. Their youth and vitality has been poured into my works and the passion that can be felt when viewing my colourful palettes can be seen woven through the stories told. There is a youthful quality to my mixed media works which are normally large scale formats as I find it hard to contain my energy on small surfaces. Take a look at Mary's artwork. Madelein Brönn Born and raised in a small town in South Africa, I discovered my love for art at an early age. Growing up in Mpumalanga, I often visited the Kruger National Park with my father, where I developed a deep appreciation for wildlife and nature. My mother's love for gardening also influenced my love for flowers and their intricate beauty. After completing my studies in computer programming, and raising a family. I decided to pursue my passion for art and began studying under a mentor for six years. During this time, I honed my skills in watercolours and charcoal and developed my signature style, which is characterised by the delicate interplay of flora. I have exhibited my work in group exhibitions both locally and internationally and has received numerous awards. My art is a reflection of my deep connection to nature and the intricate beauty of life. Through my art, I seek to capture the essence of the natural world and evoke a sense of wonder and awe in the viewer. My works are a testament to the enduring beauty of nature and the power of art to connect us to the world around us. Take a look at Madelein's artwork. Dawn Cairs My expression on canvas is a result of my obsession with the Power of Colour. World travel further inspired me to paint and explore different styles. My journey has taken me from landscapes in water colour to abstract work in oil on canvas. A great influence in this unfolding was the artist Wassily Kandinsky and his early 20th century circle. Take a look at Dawn's artwork. Cher Graham Since retiring to McGregor in 2007 an insatiable appetite for creative play and experimentation has grown into a fun and lighthearted body of work in different medias. I love portraiture, be it from life drawing, working initially from inspirational photographs or simply playing with shapes in a collage format and seeing where the creative process leads. My love for this took on a whole new dimension when I was introduced to fabric collage by Jo Nowicki in her Lion House Studio in the village and I at last found a use for the trunks full of leftover fabrics and threads inherited from my mother. Using the multitude of scraps that would normally end up in the bin, along with unwanted soft furnishings or old garments, I use the colours and textures instinctively to contour and layer the characteristic features into being. As a result, no two works can ever be the same even though they may initially be inspired by the same image. Once each snippet is glued into place, I stitch the rows freehand (as straight as possible!) using my beloved little 45 year-old Elna Lotus and voila!- a unique and lasting piece of wall art has found a place on terra firma. My work is all framed and hangs in countries around the world. In more recent times I have completed personalised commissions for clients. Take a look at Cher's artwork. Richard Joshua Richard Joshua Richard Joshua, Cape Town, South Africa (1962 - ) “I see my art as a journey of discovery, with the freedom to explore and develop my own visual language. I am fascinated and drawn to the interruption of realism, by improvising with painterly brush strokes and mark making. My aim is to create movement and emotion in a realm where colour and expression is appreciated more than true representation.” Richard is resident in the historic town of McGregor, Western Cape. It is here that he has found the perfect setting for his artistic expression. From his childhood in the townships, through his graphic design and visual art studies, to his strong connection with the native people of Arizona, he has always been immersed in visual imagery in some form or other. Portraits, commonplace buildings, landscapes and horses are the focal points of some of his most celebrated artwork. Through innovative use of brushes, squeegees, ink brayers and palette knives, Richard creates a unique style that conveys a sense of life, vibrance and captures the true essence of the subject. Richard lists Nicoli Fechen, Alex Kanevsky and Christian Hook, amongst others, as current sources of inspiration . Take a look at Richard's artwork. What I can say is that I was born in Johannesburg in 1966 and for as long as I can remember I am fascinated by the language of the arts and have been practicing as a professional painter for thirty years. Oct 2023 James de Knoop solo Exhibition Water from Stone, July 2022 Joni-Leigh Joni-Leigh Doran Joni-Leigh Doran (b.1981) is a South African artist working predominantly in the traditional medium of oil paint on canvas and linen. Formally trained as a graphic designer, she studied oil painting under renowned South African artist Ryno Swart during his later years. She has exhibited both locally and internationally including two solo exhibitions in the Langeberg region, and was the “Facing Extinction" category Winner of David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year competition in 2022 and a finalist for 3 years prior. She aims to depict the beauty and fragility of the non-human world through her wor k, and animals and natural landscapes have always provided her with limitless inspiration. Artists' Statement ‘From a tiny rural village in West Bali to an isolated farm in the Klein Karoo, I spent a significant part of my adulthood rebelling against a “conventional life”. I consistently chose to live in places with big skies, wild seas and vast landscapes teeming with life (and as little of the human kind as possible). It was in 2021, shortly before my 40th birthday, that I took up residence in the village of McGregor, “only for a time” I told myself. But once here I realized how much I’d missed the sense of community I never knew I’d been longing for. Living among other creatives and people who, like me, believe in inclusivity, in living lightly and in harmony with nature, it wasn’t long I fell in love and before I knew it, I’d put down roots. I have yet to find a more peaceful and inspiring place to live.’ Joni's Art Prints for Sale Group exhibition 'Coalescence'. Oct 2023 Joni-Leigh Doran solo Exhibition Cognisance, January 2022 Edna Fourie I live the life I love which includes the whole caboodle from peace to chaos, vulnerability to liberation. I strive to express the resulting personal growth in my art with heartfelt directness rather than intellectual control. My art depicts images such as figures, flowers, birds which become carriers of deeper meaning. The theme running through all my work is inner transformation. In just over 5 years he created more than 400 artworks, including around 200 oil paintings. Floris has sold locally and internationally and works include landscapes, still life images, portraits and self-portraits. His work is characterised by bold, symbolic colours, and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork. One of the themes in Van Zyl`s work is to take things apart: to take realism and make it abstract by using a palette knife, to extend the paint beyond the boundaries of the form we know. He strive to capture an emotional climate more than likeness. The formal properties of paint are central concerns to Van Zyl, who employs the visceral materiality of oil paint and the expressive potential of colour to create a sense of frailty and potency. Floris studied Graphic Design at the DUT of Pretoria and graduated in 1993 before starting up his own design and art studio in Gauteng province of South Africa. He grew it into a successful business and worked extensively in the fields of advertising and communication creating brand and training awareness. By 2009 he relocated to the quiet town of Hilton in the Midlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal to follow his passion for paint. Floris currently lives in McGregor, Western Cape where he enjoys a lifestyle that supports his creative expression. Floris started exhibiting in 2011 and has since exhibited in Johannesburg and the Western Cape. During 2016, 8 of his artworks was exhibited in the Pretoria Museum of Art. He has build a considerable following in South Africa and in Europe. His work featured in various publications including Visi, SLOW Magazine, Dossier, The SA Artist, various newspapers, radio and Television interviews. After completing his schooling he studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. He left South Africa in 1984 and resided in Europe for the following 22 years. The first number of years he lived in London, then Portugal and moved to Sweden in 1989. He completed his architectural studies in Sweden. John has two daughters. John returned to South Africa in 2006. He moved to McGregor, a village in the Western Cape in 2015 where he resides. His works are an expression of his most prevalent thoughts and concerns. The vivid clarity of the images is a representation of this endeavour. John Barrow Solo Exhibition, May 2017 Neil Jonker Neil Jonker The artist Neil Jonker is surrounded in his everyday life by the abundant light and creativity of the rural landscape. The small hamlet of Baardskeerdersbos where he lives, lies in the Overberg area of the Western Cape, South Africa. It lies amongst rolling hills and mountains which stretch beneath open skies to the coast-line of Walker Bay. There is a whole lot in the air which smacks of the creative marriage of nature and human endeavour as can be experienced in Provence or Tuscany - from the extraordinary natural light playing across the landscape, to the celebration of country values in the communal life of a rural village. Here ideas are given time and warmth to rise like the yeast in a good farm bread or plaasbrood. This bread, baked also by Jonker himself, is best shared warm and steaming with a good glass of wine and robust company, sitting on a wide voor-stoep or verandah taking in the view and the country air. Even as terroir enters the soul of a good bottle of wine, so too in the soul of the artist. Within the cycle of creativity, to engage with Jonker's art is to experience something of this sensual country lifestyle (without having to brave the veld-fires and muddy roads and mosquitoes for yourself!). Growing up in ostrich-farming community of Oudtshoorn, Niel Jonker is the son of an ostrich farmer and school teacher. From his youth, he has always shied away from the attention provoked by his talent, seeking solace in the endless wonders contained in nature. Niël Jonker Solo Exhibition, March 2017 Photographers Mark Chipps Capturing life's majesty and diversity through the Lens. Mark's journey began, not in the dimly lit corridors of a prestigious art school, but in the virtual world of IT. Yet his soul yearned for more. Two decades ago, he bravely switched careers to explore the world through a lens. Mark's lens transformed everyday scenes into captivating art, revealing hidden narratives and raw emotions. His work celebrates freedom, joy, and introspection, inspiring viewers to embrace boundless possibilities. Mark's dedication to community and diversity fuels his creativity, as he skilfully navigates spaces, minds, and hearts. Mark reveres the power of his craft with a heartfelt appreciation, fully aware of the luxury bestowed upon him. The camera, his cherished companion, opens doors to intimate encounters, giving him the privilege to witness and capture the fleeting magic that makes us all uniquely human. His lens is a bridge, fostering a deep understanding and connection between subjects and viewers, making the world a little brighter. After twenty years of soul-searching, he’s unveiling his first photography exhibition, proving that following one's heart is worth the wait. Join Mark on his soul-stirring journey, where familiar and extraordinary worlds converge, and laughter accompanies every click of the shutter. He had become disillusioned with the fast-paced European lifestyle and business world and was ready for change. After much searching in the Western Cape, he settled in the small village of McGregor. This provided the perfect setting for his photography to naturally evolve into something deeper and long-lasting. Previously photography had always been just a pastime and when Dani photographed the local Poetry Festival, he realised it was an incredible opportunity to express his creativity. His passion for capturing images that portray the essence and the experience was truly ignited. Since then he has continued to photograph McGregor and its beautiful surroundings as well as local events, further honing his skills and techniques. In 2017, La Galleria came into being and has become a home for Dani’s art and the work of invited artists. For me they are an introduction to the DNA that can be absorbed from the network of canals and sluices. The heritage of these aqua ducts goes back centuries when survival in the Karoo depended on the water that they delivered. These monuments, feats of creative engineering, are embedded into the landscape of this region. They literally sing. The paintings form a part of my ongoing studies of light and shadow, the balance of contrast, colour tone combinations and composition. Here I visually approach the philosophy of in between, the unseen destinations along the way, object and non object, gateways to other habitats and the impression/illusion that is created with paint on a flat surface. The darkest place is right next to the brightest light. Shipping cost and optional insurance will be quoted separately and to be paid before shipping the artwork. For enquiries please get in touch.

With much gratitude Helen 29-10-2017 La Galleria: Dani's Photos solo exhibition As many will not be able to get to the extraordinary Stellenbosch garden created by Dylan Lewis from scratch, it's great that we have a superb record of place and art as presented by Dani's soul-stirring photographs. The varying moods are almost tangible, the beauty is captured so beautifully in every frame. Thank you. Myrna Robins 25-10-2017 Website Photography Hi Dani I just wanted to say thank you for my wonderful photographs. The before and after shots are very good and the women all love their 'after' photographs, they look like magazine shots! Hazel Colour me Gorgeous 17-10-2017 La Galleria: writing workshop It is true that writing begets writing, and that inspiration has to find you working. But it is just as true that writers, poets, and thinkers are inspired by the art of others. If you're looking for an artful venue that has as much soul as it has beauty, then choose La Galleria . The gallery offers a cool, intimate, light-filled space with a break-away room. Dani and Manu are gracious hosts and among their other talents, make an excellent coffee, served with delicious home-made Italian bakes. Write Your Way In: a writing workshop, was facilitated by Write-Now, and organised by The MAC project. Sandra Hill 07-09-2017 Event Photography Hi Dani, these photos are so amazing! wow, i love the way you captured the drama of the performance! In the moment of performance one is not always fully comprehending the extent to which one is expressing meaning/feeling/visuals.. but these photos capture it so well - and jeeez what scary expressions my face can pull into. so many different faces I see in myself. (and that one with the cat sniffing the mirror on my tummy is so adorable. i remember i felt the cat close to my body - glad you got a picture of that moment!). these photos compliment this piece SO extremely well... all the reflections you picked up of the trees and the people's faces. so many moods.. the garden that time of the day with that dappled sunlight is just so magic! i can write a story about each picture...it is hard, but let me keep this message short.. hehe..Gracie mille!! Lara Kirsten 01-07-2017 Artist Photography Hi Daniele, They are great! Thanks, Go for it… you're a great photographer and have a very good eye. Bridget Luff 25-03-2017 Commercial Photography Many thanks for lovely efficient service. Lorraine 03-03-2017 La Galleria: canvas prints Dear Daniele, the prints have arrived safely. They are beautiful. Thank you very much. Michelle 25-09-2016 Artist Photography Dear Dani, How can I start to express my absolute delight to view all these pics!? I have come into wifi contact again today YEAH! and what joy to find your mail with your photos on your blog. Last week when I viewed that first series you posted I only could view them from my phone and then I was out of signal for over a week. I am now on my laptop and had a good slow look at all your photos.. and I am speechless. Maybe I should give you a call rather to express my gratitude. Sho you have captured so many different looks in me (-; showeee, what a journey for me to look back on these.. I am quite lightheaded now. I am also so glad to see photos of the audience as well. Very special to see their faces and reactions. And i LOVE the cat (-; And all the different angles of the writing.. sho and to know that you took all these photos in such quick time.. you did not have time to really plan and gather your wits. You just did it in the moment! Wow, respect! wow I must say those photos on the road are my favourite - That is where I am happiest - in motion - and in my own space on a dirt road. As mush as I love the words and the audience, I can see I was at my most happiest there on the dirt road - far away from it all. I can see the total relaxation and happiness on my face.. showeeee, I have always wished someone could capture this glowingness of my Self. And you DID IT.. I am often so self-conscious of photos of myself.. i do not always look like me - or what I would like to look like.. you know us women can be so self-critical hehe. I am glad you could go on this little journey with me with your camera.. I am immensely grateful to your time and skill. Aai, thank you. THANK YOU.. Lara Kirsten 16-09-2016 Event Photography Dear Dani, Wonderful WONDERFUL!!! these pictures are so SO fantastic. You captured everything beautifully!
