The exhibition features 66 mixed-media miniatures by artist Adriaan Landman. This is Landman's first exhibition in 13 years. The miniatures explore many of the themes from Landman's previous body of work. The current exhibition consists mainly of landscapes, with a focus on Namakwaland, as well as portraits, figure studies, and still-life paintings. La Galleria is thrilled to embark on a new phase in its evolution. After seven successful years, the gallery will transition to a revised exhibition approach starting July 13, 2024. Liminality The understanding of liminality has multiple contexts, ranging from the social and cultural to the spatial. The root word limen “is derived from the Latin word for ‘threshold,’ and literally means ‘being on a threshold”. It is the in-between stage where “the realm of conscious and unconscious speculation and questioning exists. Where tradition and ideas are intermingled, taken apart and reassembled – where memory, values, and intentions collide. This sense of liminality is represented by historical houses located in a small town called McGregor, in the Western Cape. McGregor is a place steeped in history - history in its own right, as well as part of the history of our country. Through my paintings, I seek to re-establish the houses as both a physical presence and as a metaphor. The historical houses with their small windows convey a sense of discontinuity, “a shutting in and a shutting out.” Where the outside and the inside do not meet. With layering and mark-making I am blurring the perception of the occupied space, becoming both one thing and at the same time another. An in between space, a space of ambiguity, threshold, transition and, an experience of liminality, creating a homogenous space where the house and its surrounds are visually merged - a moment of ambiguity or opportunity. Opening on 7 October 2023, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience McGregor through the perspectives of these local artists. Each artist has interpreted their village in a distinct way, from Doran’s delicate and colorful oil paintings to Joshua’s portraits oil on mixed media. De Knoop, network canals are part of his ongoing studies of light and shadow, while Chipps, a professional photographer, has focused on the natural beauty surrounding McGregor and its people. Dani’s Photos rounds out the group with a curated collection of superimposed images. Though working in different mediums and styles, these artists have come together to present a cohesive vision of McGregor. Their works demonstrate how the village’s scenic landscapes, architecture, light, and community life can coalesce into a unified sense of place. Viewers will gain insight into what makes this village so inspiring through the eyes of these artists who call it home.
